Microcopy Case Study with Planta

My Dead Plants Deserve Better

Microcopy is the bread and butter of UX Writing. This case study, in particular, is my favorite example to refer to when we’re talking about how tone of voice, language, and overall content design really impacts a user’s experience with your brand and software.

Learn how one small flow can actually have a big impact on a user’s relationship with Planta.

This case study was self-initiated, so I put together a slide deck to better explain and walk you through my thought process step-by-step

What I Learned

Here are a couple high-level nuggets of insight.

  • It’s important for software teams to identify and prioritize the flows that might evoke the most frustration, hesitation, sadness, etc. When we invest design, content, and engineer resources into those flows, we can help build/maintain trust and transparency with our users. “Marketing a plant as dead” is one of such examples for Planta.

  • As a user, I felt a ping of ick when I read “Plant Graveyard.” Sometimes, all it takes is researching and brainstorming better names for objects to aid with comprehension, empathy, and trust.
